Every organisation, whether small or large, old or new, business or sports, has a particular culture. This can be a most powerful, positive influence on behaviour or it can be a major, negative factor on motivation in the workplace. An organisation's culture is made up of the customs, stories, practices, assumptions, values, symbols, ceremonies, and traditions that are shared within the people in the organisation. Culture is usually difficult to change because it is embedded and reinforced by all the important decisions that are made by management. An organisation which has a positive and motivating culture will be a more empowering workplace for its people and the outcome will be higher levels of performance. This is the second trait of successful organisations - having an effective operating culture that is aligned with what the organisation is aiming to achieve.
